In this lecture, titled “Using Google’s My Maps as a Research and Analysis Tool,” attendees will explore how to transition from using Google Maps for simple navigation to leveraging it as a robust platform for genealogical discovery. While many are familiar with basic map searches, this session demonstrates the functional power of the “My Maps” feature for creating custom, shareable research layers that visualize an ancestor’s life and movements. Participants will learn a methodical approach to plotting geographical data, including technical demonstrations on how to insert lines, shapes, images, and text to reconstruct historical neighborhoods or migration paths. By examining practical case studies, the presentation illustrates how custom mapping serves as a dynamic analysis tool for identifying patterns in research and provides a unique, visual medium for presenting complex family histories to others.
Note: I also have a 2-3 hour workshop on this topic.
